You’ve likely seen the stink bug during the early fall while the weather is still warm. Indeed, its name is ideal for what this insect is famous for.

In addition, they’re also called shield bugs because of their strong resemblance to shields. Yet while not harmful to people, they will release a strong smell when crushed or disturbed. They can also be highly destructive to fruits and vegetables.

What is a Stink Bug?

Stink bugs are characterized by their small sizes. They also come in various colors, but one of the most frequently observed is the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB). This species is brownish, featuring white markings. They can amass in large numbers on trees and plants on your property. But the biggest risk they pose is the damage they can cause to gardens and farming operations.

Signs You Have Stink Bugs

The number one sign you have stink bugs is to physically see them. You’ll notice them on the trees and plants around your home. Sometimes you’ll see large numbers. When you don’t see live ones, you’ll likely dead insects instead. Additionally, if you grow fruit, you can see the stippling caused by their feeding.

History of the Stink Bug

Stink bugs have a long history. In fact, their origins started in Asian countries, including Taiwan, China, and Japan. And through the shipping industry, they were accidentally imported into the United States.

A Brown Marmorated Stink Bug was collected in 1998 in Allentown, PA, marking the beginning of the invasion.

But because these insects are fast reproducers, they rapidly spread up and down the east coast and quickly moved into the South. After that, they began moving westward.

And today, you’ll find them as far west as California. Likewise, our state of Illinois is no exception to the presence of these pesky insects.

Destruction Caused by Stink Bugs

Fruit and plants are the primary sources of food for stink bugs. They will pierce the fruit and suck out any juices to consume it.  In the process, their saliva is injected into the fruit. The results are puckering or stippling in the fruit, which makes them indelible.

Meanwhile, stink bugs also enjoy feasting on plants like tomatoes, corn, and soybeans.

And because they amass in large numbers, they can devastate fruit crops, harming your garden or a commercial farm. This is why stink bugs are such a serious pest and problem around your property.
